Statistical highlights of the fifth day’s play of the fourth Test between India and England.

# India’s win by an innings and 36 runs at Mumbai is their biggest over England in Tests at home.

# India’s other three wins by an innings are — innings & 22 runs at Chennai in 1992-93, innings & 15 runs at Mumbai in 1992-93 and innings & eight runs at Chennai in 1951-52.

# For the second time, India have won three Tests in a row vs England — Visakhapatnam, Mohali and Mumbai. The first time was under Mohammad Azharuddin’s captaincy in 1992-93 –Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai.

# India have won 8 Tests out of 11 played (3 draws) this year, equalled their previous record of most wins in calendar year — 8 wins, 3 losses and 3 draws out of 14 played in 2010.

# For the third time, a team has lost by an innings after making 400 or more in the first innings of a Test match. The first team to earn this dubious distinction was England, who lost by an innings & 39 runs to Australia at The Oval in 1930, Sri Lanka had lost by an innings & 14 runs to England at Cardiff in May 2011 and now England have lost by an innings & 36 runs to India at the Wankhede Stadium in December 2016.

# Virat Kohli has become the first Indian captain to win five successive Test rubbers — 2-1 vs Sri Lanka in 2015; 3-0 vs South Africa in 2015-16; 2-0 vs West Indies in 2016; 3-0 vs New Zealand and 3-0 (leading) vs England — both in 2016-17.

# Previously India had won five consecutive series under three different captains — Anil Kumble, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virender Sehwag between 2008 and 2010.



# The world record for winning most consecutive series is held by Australia and England — nine each.

# After losing three successive series to England between 2011 and 2014, India have finally won the series against them.

# R Ashwin’s bowling figures of 12/167 are the best by a spinner in a Test match at Wankhede Stadium, eclipsing the 12/181 by Laxman Shivaramakrishnan vs England in 1984-85.


# Ashwin’s performance is the best by an Indian bowler at Wankhede Stadium and the second best by any bowler at this ground next only to Ian Botham’s 13/106 in February 1980.

# Ashwin is the 6th Indian bowlers to take 10 wickets or more in a Test vs England. Other five were Vinoo Mankad, Salim Durani, Shivaramakrishnan, Chetan Sharma and Anil Kumble.

# Ashwin’s 12 for 167 are the second best in wins by an Indian bowler vs England in a Test match, next only to the 12 for 108 by Vinoo Mankad at Chennai in 1951-52.

# Ashwin’s first instance of 10 wickets or more in a Test match vs England is his seventh instance overall. Kumble is the only bowler to have recorded more instances (8) than him.

# With six instances of 10 wickets or more in a Test match in Indian wins, Ashwin has established an Indian record, surpassing the five by Kumble.

# Ashwin has taken 15 five-wicket hauls while taking 133 wickets in 20 Tests at an average of 19.40 since January 2015 — the highest tally by any bowler in two successive calendar years. Muralitharan had bagged 14 five-wicket hauls in consecutive years twice – between 2000 & 2001 and 2006 & 2007.

# Kohli has got his 4th Man of the Match award in Tests — his first instance of receiving two awards in a series –at Visakhapatnam and Mumbai.

# Ravindra Jadeja has played 16 Tests in India without losing a single match — 13 wins and 3 drawn games. He has equalled an Indian record held by Rajesh Chauhan, who had figured in 11 wins and five drawn games out of 16 Tests played by him at home. In fact, Chauhan never figured in a losing cause, winning 12 and drawing the remaining 9 out of 21 Tests.

# Cook has lost 21, won 24 and drawn 13 out of 58 Tests as captain. He has equaled England record held by Mike Atherton, who had also lost 21 out of 54 (13 wins & 20 draws).
